How to Wear Rudraksha for the First Time: Muhurat, Mantra, Method
Bringing home your first Rudraksha is a tender moment — somewhere between receiving a blessing and welcoming a guest. Tradition asks us to honour it: choose a good day, purify the bead, invoke the mantra, and only then let it rest against the skin. Here is the complete first-time method, step by unhurried step.
Choosing the day: a simple muhurat
You do not need an elaborate horoscope to begin. Tradition considers these times naturally auspicious for first wearing a Rudraksha:
- Monday (Somvar) — the day of Lord Shiva, and the most popular choice.
- Mahashivratri — held especially sacred for anything connected with Shiva.
- The month of Shravan — the monsoon month devoted to Shiva worship.
- Pradosh — the twilight of the thirteenth lunar day, dear to Shaiva tradition.
Choose a morning after your bath, when the mind is fresh and the house is calm. If none of these days is practical, do not postpone devotion for the calendar's sake — tradition holds that a sincere heart makes any clean morning auspicious.
Preparing and energising the bead
Many families perform a simple energising before the first wearing. A gentle home version looks like this:
- Wash the bead in clean water; some households first bathe it in panchamrit or raw milk, then rinse with water and pat dry.
- Place it overnight in your puja room, on a clean cloth near the deity.
- In the morning, offer a little sandal paste, a flower and incense.
- Sit facing east or north and chant Om Namah Shivaya — 11 times at minimum, 108 times if you can — holding the bead in your right palm.
- Bow, thank Lord Shiva, and wear the bead.
Lineages differ in their details. If your family has a guru or a settled parampara, that instruction takes precedence over any article, including this one.
Thread, silver or gold?
Tradition permits several settings. A red or yellow silk or cotton thread is the classic and most affordable choice, changed whenever it frays. Silver caps and chains are widely used and easy to maintain, while gold is traditional for rarer, treasured beads. Wear the bead so it rests near the heart or at the pit of the throat; many devotees also wear Rudraksha on the wrist. Most traditions advise avoiding a black thread for sacred beads, though customs vary — when in doubt, ask your family elders.
Everyday etiquette for a new wearer
A few loving disciplines keep the relationship respectful:
- Keep the bead clean and dry; remove it before swimming or using harsh soaps.
- Many traditions advise removing it before visiting a cremation ground, during intimate moments, and on occasions of intoxication.
- Do not lend your worn bead casually; in tradition it becomes personal to you.
- If it cracks or the thread snaps, do not panic — rest it respectfully in your puja room and arrange a replacement.
- Chant your mantra when wearing it each morning, even once, so the act stays conscious.
Wearing a Rudraksha is a relationship, and like all relationships it deepens through small daily courtesies. It goes without saying that all of this presumes a genuine bead — a lab-certified Rudraksha from Divine Hindu arrives tested, certified and ready for its first Monday.
Frequently asked questions
Which mantra should I chant while wearing Rudraksha?
Om Namah Shivaya is universal and sufficient. Each mukhi also has its own traditional beej mantra — for example, Om Hreem Namah for the 5 mukhi — which you may adopt as your practice matures.
Can I wear my Rudraksha while sleeping or bathing?
Customs differ. Many devotees remove it at night and rest it in the puja room, and most remove it while bathing — less for scripture than because hot water and soap harm a natural seed.
What if I miss the muhurat and simply start wearing it?
Nothing terrible happens. Tradition is loving, not punishing. Wash and re-energise the bead on the coming Monday, and continue with a settled heart.
